Which £20,000 SUV offers plenty of space for my yoga mats?

Dear Alex,

I’m looking to replace my 10-year-old, 120,000-mile Nissan Note. I need a bigger boot as I carry lots of yoga mats for my business. I’d also like something a bit higher, manual gear change and low mileage, and my budget is £20,000 plus trade-in. Family members have a new Dacia Duster and are pleased with it. Something like that?

Dear AC,

The part-exchange value on your car is probably around £1,000-1,500, which brings your total budget to £21,500. The Duster would meet your needs pretty well; a brand new TCE 130 Expression comes in at £19,695, or you could step up to the £21,195 TCE 130 Journey.

If you’d prefer to go used, I’d recommend a Skoda Karoq. The Karoq’s flexible rear seating (standard on SE L versions and above) can slide, tumble, fold and even be removed completely, giving you the flexibility to choose whether to turn it, effectively, into a two-seat van to fill it full of yoga mats, or to carry five people.

I found a 2021 1.0 TSI SE L – my personal favourite way to spec a Karoq – with just 6,000 miles on the clock going for £20,000 at a Skoda dealer. The downside here is you’d only have a year left of the manufacturer’s warranty.

An alternative therefore might be a Kia Sportage. The Sportage is a bit more expensive than the Karoq, and not quite as versatile – but from new they came with a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty. That means the 2021 1.6 T-GDi 2 with 19,000 miles on it that I found would still have five years of manufacturer cover remaining – it’s yours for £21,000.
