Jul. 13—DICKINSON — Community members interested in nourishing both their body and mind can gear up with their yoga mats in hand as Instructor Kayla Sleator brings outdoor yoga classes to the Dickinson community.
Sleator is eager to bring more yoga and wellness practices to the Dickinson community from yoga at Patterson Lake to upcoming outdoor classes hosted at Legacy Square.
“I’m very happy to be able to bring yoga and wellness practices to Dickinson and especially be able to get outdoors when we’re cooped up all winter long. It’s so nice to utilize the summer fully,” Sleator said.
The Legacy Square sessions will be held each Monday and Wednesday at 9 am starting July 17. Folks can register for classes by emailing Sleator at
.
The registration process is the same for Yoga by the Lake which is held every other Saturday at 11 am.
Sleator, a certified yoga instructor, has been on her journey in the field since she was 16 years old. She discovered the transformative power of yoga and meditation, particularly in managing mental health challenges like anxiety and depression.
“Around 2016 is when I really just noticed how much it was helping me in my life. And I’ve dealt with anxiety and depression and so finding just a natural way to help me cope with those things was huge. I realized how helpful it was and it made me want to share it with the rest of the world,” Sleator said.
Emphasizing the mental benefits of yoga, Sleator describes the practice as a way to tune out distractions and focus on the present moment.
By directing attention to the breath and letting go of anxiety inducing thoughts, though it does take practice, individuals can experience relief and cultivate a sense of tranquility.
“So I am in that flow state where I’m just focusing on what I’m doing, that’s making me feel good, it makes my body feel good because I’m healthy and can wake up not feeling like I’m in pain, so that physical benefit helps already,” Sleator said.
Sleator extends a warm invitation to individuals of all levels and capabilities to join her classes as there are accommodations available to meet diverse needs.
“There’s a saying that yoga is for everybody but also every body. So regardless of your capabilities there’s some kind of yoga for you and modifications are always available,” Sleator said.
Sleator encourages those who feel hesitant due to concerns about things like flexibility to take the first step, as every pose can be modified to suit individual abilities, but also because it is a journey you are working towards
She finds fulfillment in watching her student’s progress and inspiring others to practice yoga.
“I have this one student who had never gone to a class before. She’s had some issues, like knee issues and stuff and the yoga has helped her gain her mobility. So I think the most rewarding thing is to just watch the students learn and progress. That’s my favorite,” Sleator said.
By offering these outdoor yoga classes, Sleator aims to contribute to the well-being of the Dickinson community and share the practice of yoga with a greater audience.
The benefits extend beyond physical exercise, providing an avenue for individuals to enhance their mental health and find solace in the present moment.
So grab your yoga mat and join Sleator in this transformative journey toward holistic wellness.
